Big Joe Turner Blues FA

Page history last edited by felix ansell 8 years, 12 months ago

Real Name: Joseph Vernon Turner Jr.

Born: May 18, 1911 in Kansas City, Missouri

Died: November 24 1985 in Inglewood, California

Style:

Big Joe Turner used and popularized a style called boogie woogie, in witch the left hand plays a fast and constant eighth note beat while the right hand improvises on the melody. Turner also used his large voice to project across the club or bar in between melody's. The beginning of his career before 1950 was spent mostly appearing with other famous artists. His are are more upbeat than some other blues artists and he also branched out into rock and roll with songs like Shake Rattle and Roll, showing where the roots for rock and roll come from.

My Opinion:

Big Joe Turner sings with a lot of heart as he uses a big voice to project his music. I enjoy his more upbeat(early rock and pop esque) blues. Turner also uses many calls out to his band member such as in the song Boogie Woogie Country Girl, I see this technique a lot in rock and roll music today.

i like the way you describe his music but you could go into more detail about how he influences later blues and modern music

I also recommend going more in-depth with how Turner constructed his blues, why (influences), and possibly any artists you can find his influence in. It may be helpful to include one more blues song by Turner, as well.
