Billie Holiday

1915-1959

Bille Holiday was a very important and influential blues artist; she grew up in many different homes, raised by many different people. Billie went to live with her mom in new york during her teenage years where she went into prostitution along with her mother. it was probably during this time she first was introduced to drugs, which eventually caused the downfall of her career.

Strange fruits:  In this emotional blues song billie is describing the disgusting work of the KKK, the “strange fruit” she describes are the bodies of black people hung and burned in public by the Ku Klux Klan.

The writing and detail when describing Holiday's childhood is very powerful. I would strongly recommend adding more detail about Holiday's musical career, her contribution to the blues scene, and also adding some links to a few blues songs by Holiday.
