Kurt Donald Cobain was born on February 20th, 1967 in Aberdeen, Washington. Cobain's childhood was fairly normal until his parents divorced when he was nine. This made Cobain very rebellious towards adults and society in general and this would be expressed later in his music. During his early life Cobain drew inspiration from bands such as: The Beatles, The Clash, The Ramones, Pixies, and The Melvins. He was drawn to a hard Punk Rock sound. He dropped out of high school and formed a punk band with his classmate Krist Novoselic. This was the beginning of what would become Nirvana. The band released their first album "Bleach" in 1989. It was met with little critical acclaim but Nirvana was still considered an "underground" band for the next couple years. In 1991, Nirvana got their big break when they released their second studio album Nevermind, headlined by mega hit "Smells Like Teen Spirit". The song was revered for it's quite to loud sound, something the band would become famous for. This made Nirvana world famous in a matter of days and they went from playing bars and tiny settings to sold out arenas around the world. Nevermind sold 31 million copies and is regarded by many as one of the greatest rock albums of all time.  However this sudden increase in popularity was not completely good for the members of the band. Cobain had had a drug problem since he was 20 years old and with the stress that came along with fame it was only going to get worse. 

   Touring for Nevermind ended with a legendary performance at "The Reading Festival" in Reading, England in 1992. After this, Kurt married Courtney Love, a fellow lead singer from the band Hole. The couple welcomed their first and only child Frances Bean in August of the same year.  The couple had a long legal dispute over whether they could keep the child or not given their tendencies to abuse drugs. In 1993, Nirvana released their third and final album In Utero, it sold 15 million copies (half of what Nevermind sold) but was a much deeper album with a diminished pop feel compared to their previous work. In Utero was very pure and less polished than Nevermind, Nirvana wanted to be known more as a punk band than as a sell-out Pop Group. Later that year, Nirvana played a famous acoustic show on MTV "Unplugged", it is significant because the band played very few hits on the show but they shed a new light on overlooked songs such as: "Pennyroyal Tea", "On a Plane", and "All Apologies". 

     As his fame grew, Cobain became more and more reliant upon heroin, so much in fact that at the peak of his use he was spending $300 a day on the drug. His marriage with Courtney Love had soured and cheating allegations and divorce rumors had both surfaced in the public eye along with Love's accusations that Cobain was suicidal. In 1994, both Cobain and Love were in rehab in L.A.  Nirvana had just cancelled their planned entry in Lollapalooza Music Festival and Cobain was sick of rehab. On April 1st, Cobain jumped the fence of rehab center and caught a plane back to Seattle. On April 8th, having been missing for 7 days, his body was found in the room above the garage of his home. The cause of death was ruled a suicide by gun shot but there are many conspiracy theories that refute this claim.Millions of people mourned his death and there was a massive Vigil the following night in his home city Seattle. 

     Kurt Cobain was the voice of a generation and brought 90's Alternative Rock to the top of the charts.Nirvana ended Hair Metal music completely and brought on Grunge to the music industry, they completely shifted the direction of music for years to come. He has inspired many of the bands you hear today such as Stone Temple Pilots and Green Day along with other artists such as Machine Gun Kelley and  Travis Scott.Many bands cover Nirvana's songs and musically they have achieved immortality, and in 2014 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 on their first eligible year on the ballot.
