Twelve Tone Serialism

Suggestions for Using Rows in Creative Ways:

  1. Melodic line - successive notes with interesting rhythmic durations that give weight to some notes more than others. Also the use of octave displacement in repeated fragments.
  2. Harmony - stacking interesting interval combinations that correspond with the texture and tone of your subject.
  3. Division of row into unique patterns - using accents or rests to divide the twelve tones into interesting patterns,  ex: 3 - 3 - 2 - 2 - 2.
  4. Reflecting Interval relationships/Vector groups as other dimensions in music:
  • Time, interval between notes
  • Patterns, rhythm groupings and instrument groupings
  • Volume or Velocity levels (0-11 - just like Nigel Tufnel's amplifier in "Spinal Tap")
  • Representing 12 increments along any other musical spectrum/continuum - interval between increments reflects row/segments

ex: Light/dark (perhaps expressed as tone color or instrument groupings) OR Pan- L/R with 12 degrees, 6 on either side of center
