Blues Listening Weekend of  Mar 3-5th

Page history last edited by John DiTomaso 10 years, 7 months ago

For each day this weekend beginning Friday afternoon or evening, listen to the two songs given below.

  • Your only instruction is to listen deeply, without other distractions. Closing your eyes helps significantly.
  • At the end of each listening session you may wish to listen to all or part of each song again and consider connections between them.
  • Briefly note any distinguishably similar traits that you hear in your journal. Differences are also worth noting, but our primary goal is to understand the blues 'vocabulary' that is present in all of these selections.
  • Blues scale and chord progression knowledge will help as you explore these tracks. Use this to try playing some blues on your own. We will practice on keyboards in class on Monday and Tuesday.

Friday

19 - Walking Blues.mp3  Robert Johnson

I woke up this mornin feelin round for my shoes.  Know by that I got these old Walkin Blues, well.  Woke this mornin feel round for my shoes.  But you know by that, I got these old Walkin Blues.

Well, leave this mornin if I have to, ride the blinds.  I feel mistreated, and I don't mind dyin.  Leave this morning, if I have to ride the blind.  Babe, I been mistreated, and I don't mind dyin.

Well, some people tell me that the worried blues ain't bad.  Worst old feelin I most ever had.  People tell me that these old worried blues ain't bad.  It's the worst old feelin, I most ever had.

She got a elgin movement from her head down to her toes.  Break in on a dollar most anywhere she goes.  Ooh, to her head down to her toes.  Lord, she break in on a dollar, most anywhere she goes.

I really enjoy the blues, Rock n Roll, and anything with a good guitar track on it, and I knew that Led Zeppelin, and all those old Rock n Roll bands used the blues to make their own music, but I had no idea that newer bands like Jet, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers used some of these techniques to make their music. Very cool. It's also cool how blues comes up in even the most unnoticeable places in music today. The I, IV and V chords pop up everywhere.

Friday: The first song sounds like blues, the second one doesnt.
Saturday: I like the first one it sounds like something you would hear walking into an old resturant, The second one by bob dylan is nice, the words are cool
Sunday: The led zeppelin doesnt sound like blues, The second one sounds like rock as well.

I think i already mentioned it in class but the song 'So Good' is one of my favorite old songs and after learning about the form of the blues i discovered that that song actually uses the 1 4 5 and thats what makes the song so good. When you, Mr. Ditamaso, first told us that the blues has formed many songs from this generation, i was skeptical at first because i couldnt think of any exmaples, but then i realized that it IS in many song formations, and all the songs still sound great. I love the Red Hot video by the way its very good i showed my mommy XD
