Gabe N's Top 10

Gabe Nahn's Top 10 Artists:

1. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones:

Favorite Song: Another Drinkin' Song from Let's Face It

-Ska band with an amazing singer whose voice is wicked gravelly and deep, which makes all their songs different from anyone else. Also use a brass section combined with stereotypical band (guitar, singer, bass, drums,). A lot of their songs bring serious issues up (like "Let's Face It" makes a statemant about rascism).

2. Reel Big Fish:

Favorite Song: Party Down from Monkeys for nothin' and the Chimps for free

-Ska/Alternative band. They make both incredibly funny songs, and also some songs that make me want to just be happy. Great brass section, and i can also sing their songs reasonably well.

3. The Aquabats:

Favorite song: Fashion Zombies from Charge!

-The Aquabats are a once-ska now alternative band that not only make songs about fashion zombies, CD repo men, and martian girls, but to top it off, they dress like a team of superheroes. they are goofy for goofiness sake, and their music is original and ridiculous.

4. They Might Be Giants:

Favorite song: Istanbul (not Constantinople) from Severe Tire Damage

-Comedy group that both makes funny songs, songs that don't make sense at all, and are therefore funny, and some almost entirely instrumental songs that show off their musical talent. They also like to use the accordion, so they can't really go wrong. Another thing I like is that they are basically their own genre.

5. Streetlight Manifesto:

Favorite Song: If and When we Rise Again from Everything Went Numb

-another Ska band. I just like their music, because it can both use brass with "stereotype band" to make some bright or melancholy songs, or these guys especially can make some scary, "angry" music. when Streetlight puts some effort into it, their songs are "violent".

6. Modest Mouse:

Favorite Song: Missed The Boat from We were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank

-They're Alternative/punk and can make some REALLY depressing stuff, which I for some reason really like and don't get depressed by. I also really like their name. their singer also has an odd slightly rasping voice (it's hard to describe), which doesn't actually make the songs worse; it gives them an "off" quality that sounds pretty good once you get used to it (it's an acquired taste).

7. Mustard Plug:

Favorite Song: Mr. Smiley from Greatest Hits: Mustard Plug

-Mustard Plug uses brass well, and I don't know that many of their songs but one of the top reasons I like them is for their song Mr. Smiley, which is simply an amazing song because the melody from the guitar combines with brass brilliantly, and the whole song is upbeat sounding but the lyrics are somewhat less than happy, which makes the song funny in an ironic way.

8. Cryoshell:

Favorite Song: Tie between Gravity Hurts and Murky

-Cryoshell is a really not well known band. As far as I know they don't have much money for publicity, but their music is really great. It's kind of creepy and dark (their genre is "dark rock") but the vocalists are amazing. Some of their songs are depressing, too, and I really like that for some reason.

9. Coldplay:

Favorite Song: Fix You from X and Y

-Coldplay makes really interesting music, and I don't really know how to elaborate on that; I just find it neat to listen to. I do like that they use the piano, and very well; also their drummer plays a marching drum sometimes. Most of their somgs are also really hopeful and uplifting, and make me fell good.

10. Linkin Park:

Favorite Song: Krwling from Reanimation or Waiting for the End from A Thousand Suns

-There's one thing I don't like about Linkin Park. some of their songs have too much screaming, but the singer's voice, when he actually sings, is really unique, and he puts it to good use. They also have Mike Shinoda; who's an amazing rapper. He's not like Eminem (I like Eminem too;) but his rapping just sounds great to me. Linkin Park can also make both really dpressing and really uplifting songs. Range is good.

I haven't heard of a lot of these bands, however, i have heard of some of them, like Coldplay and Linkin Park, which i like a lot. I too like modern rock bands.
