new orleans research BT

Page history last edited by brendan 13 years, 10 months ago

For my New Orleans research I mostly looked at Louis Armstrong. I listened to recordings of Blueberry Hill, Hello Dolly, and of course When the Saints. All the pieces were backed by a brass band, with emphasis on the trombones. They featured extended intrusmental solos and occasionally overlapping solos. Also from listening on my own to bands like the Meters (and to our discussions in class) I picked up a few other new orleans traits to use, like simple 2 chord vamps, funk ensembles, some clave usage, and stretching time. I applied a lot of the funk traits. In the main section of my song, the drums intentionally stretch the time for a measure and then snap back--I think that's every four measures. That main section is mostly made up of 2 piano solos - one sort of rhodesy with the chords on the left hand, and the other just a straight piano that comes in for the melody, drops out for a while, then starts to solo on top of the other solo. There's also a timibale-ish solo going on, which refers back to the intro which is a sort of faster latin thing based on a clave. The whole thing is based on a 2 chord vamp from F to Eb.

At some point i'd like to re-record the solos and bass so that they take the stretch time in the drums more into account. i think it would be really cool if everything were rhythmically together, but right now they kinda don't...
