                                                                 Twelve Tone Music Writing:

     Tired of the restrictions tonal music and the classical genre that had dominated the last few hundred years, placed on them, composers such as Schoenberg drifted from the rigid traditional format. Twelve tone music is derived from creating a series of twelve notes in a row with no repeats. By doin this every note in the octave is utilized. After the origanil row or "prime row" is conducted, a twlve by twleve square filled in with notes based off the origanil row. This square is called a matrix and has many different combinations of notes the composer can utilze and play. By playing the notes in different rows in order first, then harmonizing and making melodies one is using twelve tone music.

     In class we studied and played around with twelve tone music. We selected a piece of art made by other students in art classes. The piece of art we selected was the basis for our visual music project. We created our own twelver tone row and matrix. We wanted our row and matrix to exude the feelsing and emotions that we felt our piece of art reflected. My piece was a framed sillohoute that depiced a large size upper body of a dark figure in the bottom right smoking something red. there was another smaller figure towards the middle and bottom of the pice that was showing alarm at the smoker, this was obvoiuis by the red lines of alarm coming from the smaller figure. Instead of a nice blue sky there were red clouds raining red rain, solellly on the smaller figure. To me, this piece came a off a bit gloomy, alarmfull, and the feeling of a dreary rainy day. To convey these feelings used many note combinations in my row that i felt represenmted these. This includes many half-steps and augmented fourths.

• It's important to try and compose when you are comfortable and are the most yourself. Such as in the morning before hte day
• Don't try to hard to try and control where your music is taking you just let it flow itself

          Tom Petty has been an extrmeley succesfull artist and songwriter nfor many reasons. It's important for up and coming writers and artists to try and learn from the lessons he has left behind. Instead of being commercial and bowing to what he thought the charts would want he stayed true to himself and his music reflected that, no matter who he was at that time. Because of that we can see the changes in him as a person through his music. Now he lives in a relaxed country setting and enjoys it, compared to his past days in L.A. and the urban scene. Tom feels his best songs can take mere minutes to write because they are the ones that come right to him. Also he always writes while playing an instrument, usually guitar. Some of his songs take weeks though so don't get discouraged because all songs are differet. In stead of tkaing guitar lessons he favored learngin around the way from older more experianced guitarists. Just like Tom learned from others, we should learn from him.
