Ida Cox

 

-born February 25, 1896 as Ida Prather    

-born in Toccoa, Georgia and raised in Cedartown, Georgia    

-sang in the choir at her local African Methodist church growing up

-left home as a teen to perform in vaudeville and minstrel shows

-married Adler Cox during the 1910s     

-was headlining at the 81 theater in Atlanta by 1920

-signed with Paramount Records in 1923

 

Ida Cox's music is distinct by her storng raspy voice and her frequent use of trumpets and pianos.
